School bus safety reminder for drivers

OPP remind drivers to be vigilant as children head back to school

 

DISTRICT — The Temiskaming Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) are reminding the public that with area children back in school that it is a busy time on area roads for everyone.

They say it is important for drivers to be extra vigilant in paying attention to the flashing red lights and other safety equipment used on buses.

It is illegal to fail to stop for a stopped school bus that has its overheard red signal lights flashing.

In Ontario, school bus drivers as well as members of the public can report vehicles that have illegally passed a school bus. If you are the vehicle’s registered owner, the fines will apply to you.

School buses are 16 times safer than any other vehicle because of the design and safety features. Police say all bus drivers receive extensive training in order to be qualified to operate them.

Drivers are required to give school buses space and to ease off the gas and remember that the bus could stop at any time. A moment’s inattention can bring devastating consequences say police.

The safety of children is a shared responsibility and everyone using the roadways needs to be vigilant, patient and understanding in reaching the ultimate goal of transporting children safely to and from school all year long.
