A major winter storm is expected to affect Ontario Wednesday and Thursday. A low pressure system is expected to develop and emerge from Texas today, then track northeast towards the lower Great Lakes and intensify into a major winter storm Wednesday. These types of winter storms from Texas typically dump 15 to 30 centimetres of heavy snow onto regions that get hardest hit by the heavy snow. Current indications suggest that the location of the heaviest snow will fall from the Bruce Peninsula northeast across Georgian Bay toward the Algonquin and Nipissing areas. Travelling conditions are expected to quickly deteriorate Wednesday evening as the snow arrives. Heavy snow and blowing snow reducing visibilities will be concerns. Visibility may be suddenly reduced at times in heavy snow. Travel is expected to be hazardous due to reduced visibility in some locations. Winter storm watches are issued when multiple types of severe winter weather are expected to occur together. Please continue to monitor alerts and forecasts issued by Environment Canada.
