Dust off your running shoes and locate your water bottle because the Get Active in Temiskaming run and walk series for 2024 is back.
There are six events planned for 2024, beginning with Sunday, April 14, at Temiskaming Shores City Hall in Haileybury featuring one-, two-, five-, 10- and 21-kilometre distances.
This event has an Easter theme about it where there will be chocolate treats handed out and an Easter egg hunt offered for children.
On Saturday, May 11, at the Dymond Ball Park participants are encouraged to think pink as the event has a Mother’s Day theme.
It offers 1km to 10 km distances making their way around the Dymond subdivision.
Let’s not forget about the other half of the family, the dads.
On Sunday, June 23, at Pete’s Dam Park the Father’s Day walk/run will take place.
A free barbecue is being offered to participants who decide to enter the 1km, 2km, 5km or 10km distances.
Perhaps the most popular event of all, and certainly the most colourful, is the Sunday, September 8, Colour Run winding its way around the scenic trails at the Temiskaming Nordic Ski Club. There will be colour stations on the routes if people decide they wish to have that option.
The distances are 1km, 2km, 5km, 10km and 21km.
The next event is a spooky one with a black and orange Halloween theme, where ghosts and goblins will take off from the Waterfront Pool Fitness Centre following a haunted trail of 1km, 2km, 5km and 10km distances.
The sixth and final event for the 2024 Get Active event lineup has a green and red Christmas holiday theme.
The November 30 race/walk is the only one that takes place on a Saturday. It’ll be held at Ecole secondaire catholique Sainte-Marie in New Liskeard.
Participants are encouraged to dress as Santa or an elf and have fun with the 1km, 2km and 5km distances.
FUNDING RECIPIENTS
The Get Active series not only benefits people in terms of their health and wellness, the real winners are local not-for-profit groups who receive registration fees from the six events.
Upon registration, participants can direct a portion of their registration fee towards groups that promote active lifestyles.
Beneficiaries this year are the Temiskaming Nordic Ski Race Team, the Temiskaming Shores Skating Club and the Temiskaming Thunder Basketball program.
The series is cup-less, so people are being asked to bring water bottles to each event.
Get Active organizers Chandra and Tony Juurlink also collect gently worn shoes that they donate to Soles 4 Souls Canada at the events.
“We are always looking for volunteers and it is a great way for high school students to get community service hours, “said Chandra Juurlink in an email message.
