TEMISKAMING SHORES (Staff) – High bacteria counts have resulted in the closure of the New Liskeard beach August 26.

The Timiskaming Health Unit advised that water samples at the beach revealed levels of E. coli bacteria that make the area unsafe for swimming.

  1. coli bacteria indicate contamination from human and animal waste. The health unit said its presence means that other harmful microorganisms may also be present.

The health unit said new samples will be drawn as soon as possible.

It said notices advising swimmers to stay out of the water will be removed when bacteria levels return to reasonably safe levels.

“Notices for beaches in our district are usually removed within a few days to a week,” it said.
