Rota slams early election call

DISTRICT – Nipissing-Timiskaming Liberal candidate Anthony Rota was the first off the mark for local federal election candidates in issuing a media release. On Sunday morning, just an hour after Prime Minister Stephen Harper called the October 19 federal campaign officially underway, Mr. Rota, the former MP for the riding, said an early election call by the Harper Conservatives will cost taxpayers millions of dollars.
“By calling an early election, Harper continues to demonstrate a lack of respect to Canadians,” said Mr. Rota. “A longer campaign will mean increased costs for Canadian taxpayers, who will be forced to shell out $2.8 million each day for every day Harper extends the election period.”

According to Mr. Rota, he and his local campaign team are ready. “Since I was nominated as the Liberal candidate for Nipissing-Timiskaming 14 months ago, my team and I have been busy preparing for the campaign,” said Mr. Rota. “I have met with literally thousands of constituents in the lead up to the election, and the message I keep hearing is that Canadians are ready for real change.”
The August 12 Temiskaming Speaker will have in-depth coverage on Week One of the campaign in the Temiskaming region involving the two ridings in our circulation area – Nipissing-Timiskaming and Timmins-James Bay.
