Wet weather, power failure, election call
DISTRICT (Staff) – On a Civic Holiday weekend in Temiskaming which has seen stormy weather, a late Saturday-afternoon power failure which lasted until the early hours of the morning, now sees the beginning of one of the longest federal election campaigns in Canadian history.
On Sunday morning, August 2, Prime Minister Stephen Harper announced the October 19 federal election campaign was officially underway.
In The Temiskaming Speaker circulation area there are two federal ridings.
In the north, the riding is Timmins-James Bay. The incumbent is New Democrat Charlie Angus.
In the south, the riding is Nipissing-Timiskaming. The incumbent is Conservative Jay Aspin.
The upcoming August 5 Speaker will have background stories on not only all aspects of the election campaign but details on the power failure and the various community events in our area.
