The New Liskeard Cubs have several Great North Midget League preseason games lined up: Wednesday, August 25 at 7 p.m. against the Timmins Majors in New Liskeard; Thursday, August 26 at 7:30 p.m. against Kirkland Lake, again in New Liskeard; Saturday, August 28 in Timmins at 7:30; Sunday, August 29 at 1:30 in Kirkland Lake; Tuesday, August 31 in Rouyn at 8 p.m.; and on Wednesday, September 1 Rouyn pays a visit to New Liskeard at 7:30.
WOMEN’S HOCKEY
The Temiskaming Women’s Hockey League starts the year with free clinics as an introduction to the sport for women interested in playing. No experience is necessary, full player equipment required with goalie equipment available. Sessions are at the New Liskeard arena on Sunday, August 29 from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m.; September 4 from 4 to 5 p.m.; and September 5 from 5:10 to 6:10 p.m. Registration for the upcoming season is in the lobby of the arena on Sunday, August 29 from 6-7 p.m. For more information, call Kelly O’Reilly at 676-6351 or Sheryl Gilbert at 647-8327.
SMALLMOUTH BASS SERIES
The Temiskaming Smallmouth Bass Series has the following tournaments scheduled: August 28 on Trout Lake in North Bay; Aug. 29 on Lake Nipissing in Sturgeon Falls; the year-end Classic is September 25-26 at Cassels Lake in Temagami. HGC EVENTS
The Haileybury Golf Club has the HGC Senior Tournament Monday, August 30; the second annual Haileybury Public School Golf Tournament runs Saturday, September 4. GET ACTIVE
The “Get Active in Temiskaming” series of walks and runs for all ages continues with the following events: Sunday, August 29 at the Haileybury Waterfront; Saturday, October 2 at the Temiskaming Nordic Ski Club; Saturday, November 27 for the annual Chilly Runs at the New Liskeard Pool and Fitness Center. Each run includes a 100-metre toddler dash, one-kilometre (km) kids’ run or walk, 5km run or walk and a 10km run or walk. For information or to register, contact The Running Link at 647-5108.
HOSPITAL FUN RUN
The Temiskaming Hospital’s 29th annual Fun Run is scheduled for Saturday, September 4. There are 2, 5 and 10 kilometre distances from which to choose. Medals will be presented to the top three finishers in each division. Registration begins at 9:30 a.m. and the races at 10 a.m. The 2k run goes down Clover Valley Road and back to the hospital. The 5k continues to Sunnyside Road, west to Highway 11 and back. The 10k along Clover Valley to Highway 558 (the West Road) and back. Refreshments will be available after the race. NEW LISKEARD LIONS
The New Liskeard Midget “A” Lions will begin their training camp under the auspices of head coach Tim Zafiris on Thursday, September 9 at the NL arena. Sessions begin at 7:30 p.m. and players must pre-register before going on the ice. Registration packages are available at the New Liskeard Pool and Fitness Centre. WATERFOWL HUNTING
A coalition of groups led by the Temiskaming Anglers and Hunters Association (TAHA) are sponsoring a two-day training session and hunt introducing young people between the ages of 12 and 17 to waterfowl hunting September 18 and 19. Eligible participants must have a valid Ontario hunting licence and have successfully completed a hunter education and firearms safety course. Day one is at the Timiskaming Bulls Eye Club in Hudson Township; day two, each participant will be accompanied by an experienced hunter as the group sets out to find geese. All the equipment - from firearms to decoys - will be supplied at no cost. Application forms are available at Pet Valu in the Timiskaming Square.
