Rural youth back in batters’ box
TEMISKAMING SHORES (Staff) The Rural Youth Mixed Slo-Pitch league had a longer than usual rain delay at the end of the season.
Scheduled to wrap-up August 19-22, heavy rains forced the league to move the playoffs through the next week with the finals held Saturday, August 28.
“With a total of 30 teams involved it was hectic to reschedule all those games, but we got it done with the help of the City of Temiskaming Shores and Harley Township and of course the many volunteers, players and coaches,” said Gaetan Gosselin, one of the league’s organizers.
Participating teams saw six come from Englehart, Harley (4), Casey (3), Kerns (3) Earlton (4) and Temiskaming Shores (10).
“We had 10 teams competing for the 8-10 age group title and after all was done we had our two finalists… Englehart Custom Glass Works and Earlton Caisse Populaire.”
Battling for the title on Saturday afternoon, Earlton held on for a 53 win to take the championship.
“In the 11-13 age group we had 12 teams competing for the title and in the end it came down to Harley’s Brownlee Equipment and Earlton Country Store to see who would be the champion.
Brownlee edged the Country Store 5-4 to capture the 2010 title.
“Saturday was also the year-end for T-Ball with eight teams having a fun day where all had a great time and came up as champions.”
“Thanks to coaches, volunteers, Temiskaming Shores Leisure Services and to the Friends of Harley for helping out with their field, the week-and-a-half year-end tournament was a huge success.”
